March Services 2011

26th

We were requested to launch by Solent Coastguard to assist the 9 metre yacht “EPPI 2” with 2 POB that had picked up a plastic bag around the sail drive propeller which seriously hampered their speed between the east and west bound shipping lanes 32 mile south west of Bembridge.

On launching the lifeboat made best speed arriving just on the hour to find the casualty motoring north at 4 knots in a reduced visibility, the lifeboat was positioned alongside and the skipper asked what assistance he required given that he was motoring under his own power, he was very apologetic and said that because of the extra drag on the prop he didn’t have enough fuel to make Portsmouth. So it was decision was taken to tow the casualty up as far as spit bank fort where he was happy to proceed under his own power up into his berth.

QHM were informed of the situation, the tow was released and recovered and the casualty notified them as he entered the harbour and once safely berthed.

On completion the lifeboat returned to station was rehoused and made ready for service again by 17:10

We were requested to launch by Solent MRCC at 00:30 to assist the 27’ “Megaohm” with one person onboard that was experiencing difficulties with his steering 15 miles SE of St Catherine’s light.

On launching the lifeboat made best speed and arrived on scene to find the casualty drifting, the lone skipper was asked to make the drogue line fast to his stern once passed which he did and we streamed the drogue astern for him.

The towline having been made ready was passed and once secured the lifeboat towed the casualty into Portsmouth Harbour and once inside the drogue was recovered and the casualty brought up alongside and berthed in Haslar Marina.

On completion the lifeboat returned to station was rehoused and made ready for service again by 06:50
